Anti-virus software offers limited protection against email threats as such utilities only protect you from roughly 5% of the prevailing variety of email threats.

I do have a firewall, isn’t that enough to secure my emails?

Firewalls do not typically filter the contents of emails, hence email borne threats. Since firewall works on authentication while emails move in and out without an authentication mechanism at perimeter level, it is not possible for firewall to stop every mail and force it through an authentication mechanism. Hence firewall passes that responsibility to the mail server.

Can I protect my email by placing the email server in the DMZ?

By placing mail server on the DMZ, you shift the problem instead of finding a solution. Likewise internal users will have difficulty accessing the mails which again force them to use free email services which opens another layer of risk.

What is required to have a secure email solution?

For a secure email solution, you need an hardened perimeter security solution that can deal with email threats, Spam, Viruses, Trojans and Worms plus protection against malformed messages and denial-of-service attacks. At the same time you also need to provide sophisticated routing and delivery, and provide users with secure remote access.
